Just three weeks after hosting commencement ceremonies, Lone Star College System officially kicked off the first summer session June 2.
More than 25,800 students enrolled for classes during the first summer session, a 7.3 percent increase from the same day a year ago.
Lone Star College-Montgomery reported the largest increase in total students served with a 14.8 percent increase over the previous summer session. Lone Star College-North Harris was next with an 8.4 percent increase in total students served.
Reports indicate the proportion of minority students continued to increase in addition to the number of non-traditional aged students including 30-39 year-olds increasing from 11.7 percent in 2007 to 12.1 percent in 2008. Summer 2008 credit registration reports are compiled by the LSCS Office of Institutional Resource and Effectiveness and may be accessed at http://www.lonestar.edu/31221/.
“In spite of the dramatic enrollment increase at Lone Star College-Montgomery, our first day of summer classes went incredibly smooth,” said Steve Scheffler, LSC-Montgomery dean of college relations.
“While many students waited until the last minute to register in person, our student services personnel did a tremendous job guiding students into the appropriate classes. It’s been a busy day, and our parking lots are close to full, but we’re doing everything we can to make sure that students’ needs are met,” said Scheffler.
LSC-Online, online and hybrid classes have also seen a spike in enrollment system-wide for the summer 2008 session.
Lone Star College-Kingwood reports 57 percent of students taking at least one LSC-Online course during the summer 2008 session. Lone Star College-Tomball follows with 42 percent and Lone Star College-Montgomery comes in a close third reporting 41 percent of students enrolled in at least one LSC-Online course for the summer.
LSC-Online courses offer students an affordable, user-friendly alternative to traditional on-campus classes.
Courses for the first summer session will end July 8 and the second session will begin July 10.
